What is roleplaying?

Can somebody please explain to me what roleplaying is?? I see almost every person on this forum doing it but I don't understand what it is or how it works at all. If I understood it then I could roleplay with everyone which is something I'd really like to do!

Oh, roleplaying is really fun! It's kind of like group storytelling, where each person controls their own character(s). One person usually starts with an introductory post to describe the plot, rules, setting, etc, and then everyone else takes turns posting what their character is doing. I think the best way to get an idea of roleplaying is to observe one, so you might want to take a glance at some of the ones we've already started.

Role playing, like Pudge said,it's like writing,it's also a bit like acting. "Role playing" = "playing roles."

Some places you'll see it done in a script format. such as:
Character A: *walks up to character b and says hello.*
Character B: Hi,what's up character A?
Character A: Watchin' the game,havin' a pop. sup witchu?

We do it like this:
Demi walked up to Ruby and said hello.
"Whaaaaassssssuuuuup?"
"WAAASSSSSAAAAAAAPPP?" Ruby replied,stretching her mouth as wide as possible.
"Nothin' B. Watching the game,havin' a pop."

in hero sistem or dnd. roleplaying is takeing control of a person or character in the story the gm [ game master] or dm [ dungon master] is telling. in the forum there really is no dm or gm to spaek of. so the charactors just do what the plot that is told is. mostly just free range things that the forum and rp rules apply to. the oc's in the charactor sectshion is the charictors the people on the forum have made for them to rp as.

Actually,we have game masters here too. They're more subtle,but they're there. Typically, they're the ones who create the thread and are in control of the setting,and who can do what in the thread (such as necroposting,which is bumping after the thread has been inactive for a long time,double posting,tiping liek dis, ect.)

There's a whole list of role play etiquette here,it's the rules section I believe. Basically all the P's and Q's of role playing on the A.F.

We have two role play sections.
If you want to roleplay an Original Character(OC) or anything non- Lilo and Stitch oriented, you post in the General Section.
If you want to roleplay as Sttich or one of his consorts,we have a Stitch role playing section-- just for Stitch stuff.

Ah,thanks, sounds fun! Seems a lot like my acting class lol. If I have more questions I'll certainly ask. I'll also take a look at the rules. I'll probably start off with just Stitch roleplay at first.

I could start a nice, relaxed Lilo and Stitch roleplay for you to join if you want. No plot, no pressure or anything, just characters hanging out so you can get used to the idea. ^_^

It might start off kind of slow, though, since I'm still restricting myself to using the internet only Friday-Sunday.
